Frequently Asked Questions
ACCOMODATIONS
Rawhyde offers a range of lodging options that vary by location, all designed to be comfortable, clean, and convenient after a full day of riding and training.
California
At our California facility, guests can choose from several lodging configurations depending on availability. Options include private rooms, private cabins, or shared bunkhouse accommodations. While the setting is intentionally rustic, comfort is a priority. All lodging is located on site, eliminating the need to commute to and from hotels and allowing you to stay fully immersed in the experience.
Colorado
Our Colorado location primarily features shared accommodations that reflect the more rugged and remote mountain environment. For guests who prefer additional privacy, a limited number of single-occupancy tents are available for an upgrade fee. These tents provide a private sleeping space while still keeping you close to camp and the group experience.
Comfort Details
Regardless of location or room type, every bed at Rawhyde is equipped with a heated mattress pad, fresh linens, and new pillows. The goal is simple: a warm, comfortable night’s sleep so you are rested and ready for the next day’s ride.
California Power & Charging
Each bunk in California includes a standard power outlet and USB ports for easy charging of phones, cameras, and other devices. We’ve also added a dedicated charging station in the main dining hall for extra convenience.
Colorado Power & Charging
Our Colorado facility runs on a combination of generator and solar power. Individual bunks do not have outlets, but the main lodge provides plenty of charging points where guests can plug in devices after training and before settling in for the night.
Yes. We offer couples lodging at both our California and Colorado locations. Couples can request shared accommodations when booking, and our team will ensure you’re placed in the appropriate lodging option for your stay.
No. You do not need to bring camping gear. We provide lodging at all of our facilities, along with fresh linens and towels. For our training-tours, accommodations are either in hotels or at our ZAKAR facility, which also includes linens and towels. The only thing you might want to bring is a favorite pillow or a teddy bear if it helps you sleep.
Cell Service in California
Yes. Our California facility has excellent cell service throughout the property.
Cell Service in Colorado
Service in Colorado is limited. Depending on where you are on the property or on the trail, coverage can be spotty or completely unavailable.
Both our Castaic, California and Colorado locations are equipped with Starlink WiFi, providing reliable internet access even in remote settings. That said, we encourage guests to consider reducing screen time during their stay. Rawhyde is an immersive experience, and many riders find that unplugging a bit helps them stay present, enjoy the environment, and connect more deeply with the training, the scenery, and the community around them.
Yes. Each of our locations has a TV, but we use them primarily to share daily ride highlights, training recaps, or other adventure-motorcycle programming. We don’t run standard TV channels, as our focus is on the experience, the training, and the community.
We love animals, but no - pets aren’t allowed at Rawhyde. Between motorcycles, wildlife, and a whole lot of moving parts, it’s not a safe environment for furry copilots. Your dog, cat, parrot, or emotional-support goldfish will be much happier at home.
We’ve got you covered, comfortably.
At our Castaic, California location, we recently upgraded to luxury restrooms with flush toilets, sinks, ventilation, and mirrors. We also have a mobile home on the property with two fully functioning restrooms, including showers. In addition, the ranch features outdoor showers, which quickly become a guest favorite. There’s nothing quite like a hot shower and a well-earned “shower beer” while watching the sunset after a full day of ADV training.
At ZAKAR, guests have access to full restrooms with showers.
Our Colorado facility also features modern, luxury restrooms with showers, ensuring comfort at every Rawhyde location.
Gear
Motorcycle riding is inherently dangerous, and protecting yourself properly is essential. The two most important pieces of gear you can invest in are a modern full-face helmet and a solid pair of motocross or adventure-style boots. Soft leather road boots are not recommended. Beyond that, you’ll want abrasion and impact protection for your knees, hips, elbows, back, shoulders, and hands.
You are welcome to wear either an ADV suit with integrated armor or independent armor layers under your riding apparel. We don’t care which system you prefer — we only care that you are protected and safe.
As a baseline, we require:
• A full-face helmet
• Protective gloves
• Motocross or ADV boots (mid-calf with armor)
• Textile jacket and pants with armor
• A hydration pack
CE-certified motorcycle apparel made after 2018 includes a “Class” designation on the label. Rawhyde recommends Class AA or higher.
And just for the record: no shorts or flip-flops, ever.
Yes. Our coaches and full-time mechanic will give your bike a quick inspection before class begins and let you know whether your panniers should come off. In most cases, we recommend removing them to improve balance, reduce risk during tip-overs, and make training more effective.
Below is a recommended packing list to help you prepare for your Rawhyde training program or adventure tour. Your exact needs may vary based on the season and location.

BIKE
Yes. As the official BMW off-road motorcycle training academy, Rawhyde Moto Adventures offers a full lineup of BMW adventure motorcycles for rent during our training programs and training-tours. Our fleet varies year to year, but currently includes the R1250 GS/GSA, R1300 GS/GSA, F900 GS, and we expect to add the R12 G/S soon. We may also have a limited number of F850 and F750 models available.
If you need a bike for training or a tour, we’ve got you covered with the best equipment in the industry.
You may bring any make or model of motorcycle to Rawhyde. Your bike simply needs to be street-legal and capable of off-road riding. Rawhyde is an adventure motorcycle training academy, and our curriculum is designed around full-size ADV bikes. That said, you’re welcome to bring a smaller “skinny bike” as long as it qualifies as an enduro-style motorcycle, is legal on public roads, can maintain sustained freeway speeds, and has adequate fuel capacity for the training-tour you plan to join.
As long as the bike fits those criteria, we’re happy to have you ride it.
In most cases, yes. We typically recommend removing mirrors, panniers, and windscreens prior to training. This helps reduce the risk of damage during tip-overs and allows you to move more freely on the bike while learning off-road techniques.
Before class begins, our coaches and full-time mechanic will give your bike a quick inspection and make specific recommendations to ensure it’s set up safely and appropriately for the training environment.
50/50 tires are stock for our fleet bikes. You may use “street” tires for the Intro Class. However, most of our clients do have 50/50 tires on their bikes. We recommend 50/50 tires when doing Next Step training or Expedition CV training.
At the California ranch, yes, but you will need to ship or transport your tires to the ranch. We do not have tires in stock. You will need to schedule an appointment first with a phone call to the office.
In Colorado, no. We do not have tires in stock nor do we have the equipment to install tires.
At a minimum, your bike must have a skid plate and crash bars for training. These protect critical components during low-speed drops and off-road impacts.
Not normally. If your bike malfunctions during class, and the mechanic is available, he will do what he can to try to fix the issue. You will be charged an hourly rate for service as well as the cost for parts.
No. We are not a fleet rental company. Rawhyde is an off-road motorcycle training academy, and all motorcycle rentals are offered only in conjunction with our training programs and training-tours.
We typically keep one or two lowered BMW adventure motorcycles available for rent. If you need a lowered suspension or a lowered seat, please note this when making your reservation. We’ll do our best to accommodate the request, but availability cannot be guaranteed.
Mechanical issues can delay the entire group, so our primary responsibility is to the group rather than any individual rider. If a quick trail fix isn’t possible, we may need to leave the damaged or malfunctioning bike on the trail and address it later.
A disabled motorcycle creates significant challenges. It pulls staff away from their core duties and often results in an unusually long day for the team. Because of the time, labor, and equipment involved, we must charge a recovery fee for personal motorcycles.
If you’re renting a bike from Rawhyde, we’ll cover recovery costs if the bike experiences a legitimate mechanical failure. However, if the bike becomes inoperable due to operator error or rider-caused damage, all recovery and repair costs are the responsibility of the rider.
Repair and Recovery Policy
• If a repair or recovery can be completed in under 30 minutes, there is no charge.
• If recovery takes longer than 30 minutes, the owner of the inoperable bike will be charged $120 per hour plus $1.00 per mile for labor, fuel, time, and equipment wear.
• Rawhyde will attempt to recover inoperable motorcycles, but we cannot guarantee that our support vehicles can reach every backcountry location.
• If a third party is required to retrieve a bike, all related costs are the responsibility of the bike’s owner.
The best way to avoid issues is to ride within your abilities, stay cautious, and remain on the right side of the road. Smart decisions go a long way toward keeping the entire group moving smoothly.
If you have questions about repair or recovery, please contact our office.
WHO ENROLLS AT RAWHYDE?
Rawhyde does not teach basic motorcycle operation. Riders are expected to arrive with an established foundation of riding skill.
At a minimum, participants should have several hundred miles of street riding and/or off-road riding experience.
Next Step level participants should already be competent and comfortable riding off-road.
Expedition CV participants must be very experienced off-road riders with strong bike control, stamina, and decision-making skills appropriate for extended backcountry riding.
Not necessarily. Many riders join Intro Plus or Next Step as their first Rawhyde experience. However, if you register for Intro Plus or Next Step and have not previously completed Rawhyde’s Intro to Adventure training, you must enroll in the Friday noon Pre-Training session.
Before Intro Plus or Next Step begins, all riders complete a short series of trial exercises so our coaches can evaluate riding capabilities. If we determine a rider is not adequately prepared for the demands of Intro Plus or Next Step, we will shift that rider into the Intro to Adventure program offered that same weekend to ensure a safe and productive experience.
Yes. Private training is one of the most effective ways to accelerate your skills because everything is customized to you, your bike, and your goals.
Why private training works so well
-
Fully personalized coaching with no group curriculum.
-
Faster skill development through constant feedback and focused repetition.
-
Immediate correction of habits, technique, body position, and line choice.
-
Confidence gains from training at your exact pace and ability level.
Private training during a regular camp weekend
This is the best of both worlds.
-
You enjoy the full Rawhyde camp environment: meals together, camaraderie, shared stories, and connecting with like-minded riders.
-
Your actual training is one-on-one with a dedicated coach.
-
No group pace, no group lesson plan - just a program designed specifically for you.
Private training tours and multi-day private experiences
We also offer private training outside the standard weekend format.
-
One-day private training or a guided training tour.
-
Multi-day customized training blocks.
-
Multi-day private training tours built around real terrain, real challenges, and real progression.
-
Completely tailored itineraries that combine coaching, exploration, and the freedom to train exactly where you want to improve.
If you want the most targeted, high-impact coaching we offer - whether for a single day or multiple days on tour - private instruction is the way to go. Contact our office and we’ll build a private experience around your goals.
Yes, in some cases. Before registering, you must speak with our office so we can determine whether the program is an appropriate fit for the minor.
Because our training takes place on private property, we are able to accommodate minors under certain circumstances. Each situation is evaluated individually, with safety as the top priority.
Factors we consider include the minor’s age, size, riding experience, maturity level, and the specific training being requested. A parent or legal guardian must be involved in the approval process and all required waivers must be completed in advance.
Please contact our office before registering so we can review the details and ensure a safe, productive experience for everyone involved.
Endurance is the most important factor. You’ll be on the bike for most of the day, moving your body, balancing, and repeatedly getting on and off the motorcycle. A reasonable level of cardio fitness goes a long way toward keeping your energy up, staying focused, and enjoying the experience.
You don’t need to be an athlete, but activities like walking, light jogging, cycling, or any steady cardio work will make the weekend easier and more enjoyable. The better your stamina, the more you’ll get out of the training.
LOCATIONS AND LOGISTICS
The curriculum is the same at both locations - the skills, drills, and progression don’t change.
Castaic, CA
Our California facility is acres and acres of purpose-built training terrain. Every element has been intentionally designed over many years to reinforce specific off-road and adventure-riding skills. From custom obstacle zones to engineered hill climbs, ruts, sand sections, switchbacks, and technical terrain, Castaic delivers a controlled environment where every feature serves a training purpose. It’s the most comprehensive, structured training ground in the Rawhyde ecosystem.
Colorado
In Colorado, we teach the same curriculum but in a completely natural environment. Instead of engineered features, we use the existing landscape - hills, rocks, trails, elevation changes, and raw terrain. The land itself becomes the classroom, offering real-world variability and challenges similar to what riders encounter on backcountry trips.
Our Colorado facility sits just under 10,000 feet above sea level. For riders who are sensitive to altitude or coming from lower elevations, this is an important factor to consider, as elevation can impact endurance and recovery.
Both locations deliver the same instruction. California offers a highly intentional, purpose-built training environment. Colorado offers the same curriculum applied in raw, high-elevation terrain. Each provides a different experience, but both build strong, capable riders.
California
You can fly into Burbank (Bob Hope Airport) or LAX.
Burbank is significantly easier to navigate than LAX and is also closer to Rawhyde — typically 45 to 60 minutes depending on traffic.
LAX is larger and more congested, and travel time to Rawhyde can range from 90 to 120 minutes based on Los Angeles traffic conditions.
Colorado
For our Colorado facility in Hartsel, the nearest major airport is Denver International Airport (DEN). The drive from Denver to the ranch is approximately 3 hours.
California
In California, transportation options are limited to Uber, Lyft, or a rental car. Rideshare services are readily available from both Burbank and LAX, and rental cars are an easy option if you prefer flexibility.
Colorado
Our Colorado facility is very rural and there are no public transportation or rideshare options available. A rental car is required to reach the ranch and to get around once you’re there.
Our Intro to Adventure classes typically have around 20 students. We divide the group in half and staff approximately two coaches for every nine riders to maintain a strong student-to-coach ratio.
Intro Plus and Next Step classes are smaller, averaging about 12 riders, and always include a minimum of two coaches to ensure focused instruction and individualized feedback.
Yes. Non-riding spouses are always welcome to join for the weekend. There will be a nominal a fee for lodging and meals, and we can provide details based on the specific training date and accommodations. Please contact our office for current pricing and availability.

CERTIFICATION
You do not need a motorcycle endorsement on your license to take the training class. Training occurs on private property. You do need a motorcycle endorsement on your license if you plan on doing any of the rides/tours on public highways following class.
No. Rawhyde training does not satisfy state requirements for obtaining a motorcycle license or endorsement. If you are new to riding or need a license, we recommend completing a state-approved motorcycle safety course, such as those offered through the Motorcycle Safety Foundation or your local DMV-approved provider.
Rawhyde’s programs are designed for licensed riders and focus on developing off-road skills, advanced riding techniques, and confidence in real-world adventure riding environments.
Rawhyde does not offer a public trainer certification program. All Rawhyde coaches are USMCA-certified motorcycle coaches, and several have also completed advanced instructor training and certification programs through BMW.
CUSTOM LESSONS
Yes. Private lessons are an excellent way to accelerate your skill development and build confidence with focused, one-on-one coaching. Many riders choose to schedule private lessons during our regular training camps. This gives you the best of both worlds: individualized instruction tailored to your goals, plus the camaraderie, meals, and shared experiences that come from being part of a larger training group.
Private lessons are available at both our California and Colorado locations. Visit the CA or CO training pages for current options or call to speak with a member of our team who can help you choose the right format for your riding level and objectives.
Yes. Two-up training is available through both private lessons and our Intro to Adventure program. Riding two-up requires clear communication, balance, and coordination, and our coaches are experienced in helping couples or riding partners build those skills safely and confidently.
We are also developing dedicated two-up training tours that will focus on the shared riding experience for couples. These specialized tours will offer coaching, guided riding, and a curriculum tailored to the unique dynamics of two-up adventure travel. More information will be announced soon.
No. Rawhyde does not offer sidecar training. Our programs are built around the culture and riding dynamics of two-wheel adventure motorcycles. The techniques, body positioning, and handling required for sidecar rigs are fundamentally different and would pull focus away from the core mission of our training environment.
To maintain consistency, safety, and the shared experience that defines Rawhyde, we keep our curriculum dedicated exclusively to two-wheel adventure riding.
BIKE TRANSPORTATION
No. We do not transport bikes, except our own, due to liability issues.
If you experience a mechanical issue with your personal motorcycle during a Rawhyde Adventure tour or post-training ride, please understand that any delay affects the entire group. Our primary responsibility is to keep the group moving safely and on schedule. If a quick trail fix is not possible, we may need to leave an inoperable motorcycle on the trail and address it after the group is secure.
Recovering a disabled bike is a significant undertaking. It pulls staff away from their normal duties, often extends the day for the support crew, and impacts logistics for everyone. Because of this, we charge a recovery fee for personal motorcycles that require extraction.
If you are renting a Rawhyde motorcycle, we cover the cost of recovery when the issue is due to a mechanical failure. If the bike is damaged or rendered inoperable due to rider error, all associated recovery and repair costs are the rider’s responsibility.
Recovery Policy
-
If the repair or recovery takes less than 30 minutes, there is no charge.
-
If recovery exceeds 30 minutes, the owner of the inoperable motorcycle will be charged $120 per hour plus $1.00 per mile to cover labor, fuel, time, and equipment wear.
-
Rawhyde will make every reasonable effort to recover the motorcycle, but we cannot guarantee that one of our support vehicles can safely access remote backcountry locations. Support trucks are primarily for carrying luggage and supplies, not for deep-trail extraction.
-
If a third-party recovery service is required, all costs are the responsibility of the motorcycle owner.
The best way to avoid issues is to ride within your limits, stay alert, choose safe lines, and make smart decisions on the trail.
If you have questions about repair or recovery procedures, contact our office and we will be happy to help.
CHECK-IN AND CHECK-OUT SCHEDULE
Standard check-in begins at 5:00 pm on Friday. This timing allows everyone to get settled and helps us stay on schedule for our evening orientation, appetizers, dinner, and group briefing.
If you are registered for an optional Friday class such as ADV Essentials or Pre-Training, your check-in time will be earlier. Specific arrival details for those sessions will be provided in advance.
Arriving on time is important to ensure a smooth start to the weekend and to avoid delays for the group.
For training tours that include a Sunday arrival, check-in begins at 5:00 pm. This allows time for settling in before evening orientation, dinner, and the upcoming training schedule.
Yes. Early arrivals can often be accommodated on a case-by-case basis. Please contact our office to make arrangements in advance. An additional fee applies to cover the extra night of lodging and meals.
Yes, but by appointment only. Rawhyde is not open to the public, and unscheduled drop-ins create safety issues and disrupt the guest experience.
During training weekends, our staff is fully engaged with coaching, logistics, and rider support. Unannounced visitors can interfere with active drills, moving motorcycles, and support vehicle operations. We also work hard to maintain an immersive, uninterrupted environment for our guests. Unexpected arrivals can break the flow of training and compromise the privacy and comfort of the group.
If you would like to visit the property, meet with staff, or tour the facility, please contact our office in advance so we can schedule a safe, appropriate time.
DIET/FOOD
Yes. We can accommodate most dietary needs, including vegan, vegetarian, gluten free, dairy free, and other common restrictions. Our on-site chef is experienced in tailoring the menu to meet individual requirements while still providing balanced, flavorful meals throughout your Rawhyde experience.
Because special diets require additional planning, ingredients, and prep time, a $100 fee applies for the full duration of your program. This ensures we can meet your needs without impacting the broader menu or kitchen operations.
If you have specific dietary requests or allergies, please let us know in advance so our chef can prepare accordingly.
Scheduling and Cancellation Policy
In the event you need to change your class or tour after registering, Rawhyde provides two flexible options:
a. We can hold the full value of your deposit as a credit for any future Rawhyde event for up to 12 months from the date of your originally scheduled program.
b. We can rebook you into a future class or tour on a date that works for both you and Rawhyde.
We ask that you reschedule rather than cancel whenever possible, as our team genuinely wants to provide the experience you planned. If you must cancel, the following terms apply:
Cancellation Policy
• 90 days or more before the event: Full refund, subject to terms below:
• 89 to 60 days before the event: $250 fee for training / $300 fee for tours
• 60 to 45 days before the event: $350 fee for training / $500 fee for tours
• 45 days or less before the event: No refund
Note: Additional terms may apply based on your specific booking.
Rain Policy
Rain is part of adventure riding, and our training reflects that reality. We routinely train in mixed conditions, including light rain or intermittent showers. If the forecast calls for light rain or passing showers, training proceeds as scheduled.
If the forecast indicates a sustained or severe storm that would compromise safety or training quality, Rawhyde may postpone the class. In that case, you will receive a rain check or voucher that can be applied toward any future available class.
In the event of a weather-related cancellation, refunds are not issued. Due to the nature of weather forecasting, we typically cannot make cancellation decisions more than three days in advance.
For guests traveling by air, we recognize that weather-related postponements can be inconvenient. In these cases, we will provide a $50 credit to help offset airline rebooking fees. We also strongly recommend considering travel interruption insurance when making travel arrangements.
Insurance
We operate our classes in a way that keeps serious mechanical damage rare — but off-road riding naturally exposes a GS to both cosmetic and mechanical impacts. We understand that, and we maintain a very reasonable cosmetic-damage policy.
Normal off-road wear is not charged. Our rental bikes have crash bars, and we remove common breakable items like mirrors and windscreens. Scratches, minor dings to valve covers or mufflers, and light paint marks are considered normal and come at no additional cost.
You are responsible for physical damage that requires replacement or repair. If you break a headlight, fairing, or any other component, you’ll be charged the actual cost of the part plus a modest installation fee. If a crash results in significant cosmetic impact — such as large areas of paint being scraped off — repainting or refinishing will be required, and you’ll be charged accordingly.
Our philosophy is simple: treat the bike as if it were yours. Small scratches are part of the adventure. True damage must be repaired.
Optional Rental Bike Insurance
Rawhyde offers an optional insurance program that covers the first $1,000 in damage to a rental bike. This operates similarly to the protection packages offered by car rental agencies. While optional, we strongly recommend it for peace of mind — especially given that most damage incidents fall within that range.
If you have questions about the insurance or what it covers, our office can walk you through the details.
Yes. We offer optional rental-bike insurance for the duration of your Rawhyde experience. During the checkout process, you’ll see options for both bike rentals and insurance.
Our insurance option covers the first $1,000 in damage to the rental bike. It is still your responsibility to maintain your own comprehensive, liability, and health insurance while participating at Rawhyde. Your personal motorcycle, auto, or even credit card insurance may include comprehensive damage coverage (minus your deductible), so it’s important to check with your provider.
When speaking with your insurance representative, be sure to clarify that Rawhyde is a motorcycle rider training facility — not a racing facility — as this distinction may affect coverage.
Trip cancellation insurance can help you recover the cost of your travel and program expenses in the unlikely event that your Rawhyde Adventure training date or tour is postponed, rescheduled, or canceled. There are many reputable travel insurance companies online, including Allianz Travel, as well as comparison sites like Squaremouth that allow you to review multiple policy options. A helpful overview video on travel insurance can also be found through Travel Insurance Review.
If you are traveling with us outside the United States, we strongly recommend trip-interruption coverage as well as a required international health-insurance rider through GeoBlue or a similar provider.
Note: Rawhyde does not endorse any specific insurance company, nor can we advise which policy may be most suitable for your needs.
Medical transportation insurance is separate from standard medical coverage and is designed to transport you to a hospital of your choice once you are medically stable. Companies offering this type of coverage include Medjet, Global Rescue, and similar providers.
Medical transportation insurance should not be confused with medical evacuation or search-and-rescue coverage. Evacuation coverage typically applies to the initial extraction from a remote or inaccessible location.
If you use a satellite communication device such as a Garmin inReach, there are optional search-and-rescue benefit programs available through Garmin that cover emergency evacuation and rescue services for incidents occurring in the backcountry.
Rawhyde does not endorse or recommend any specific insurance provider and cannot advise which coverage, if any, may be appropriate for your situation. Riders are responsible for evaluating and securing any insurance coverage they feel is necessary prior to participating.
Talk to our Rider Advocate
Here at Rawhyde Adventures we believe in actually having a conversation with people that are interested in our programs so please call us if you have the time. If you reach our voicemail; please leave a message and we WILL return your call promptly.
Please Note: Occasionally we have programs that require the service of our entire staff and take us far beyond cell range, and thus it may be a day or two before we can return your call, but rest assured we will do so as soon as possible.
Even though we'd really rather talk to you in person.. email is sometimes necessary so - email if you must but call us if you can, we'll be delighted to answer your questions. If you do not receive a response to your email within 2 business days; please call. If we are out of the office (as stated above) we will contact you as soon as possible.
Thank you.
