Best of the West – CA to CO

Duration: 7-day trip Price: $3,995 Food: Food/Lodging: Included Difficulty: Easy

All US-based Rawhyde training tours include private accommodations by default. Double occupancy is available upon request.

Rawhyde’s Best of the West experience is a 7 day training-tour that brings riders through many of the most iconic destinations in the American West. Death Valley, Las Vegas, the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, Antelope Canyon, Monument Valley, Four Corners and more all make an appearance on this unforgettable journey. Along the way, riders also tackle segments of four different BDR routes as well as sections of the Continental Divide. It truly is the Best of the West.

Because this is a Rawhyde training-tour, coaches provide on-trail instruction throughout the ride, making intentional stops before major terrain changes to review body positioning, control inputs, line choice, and safe navigation strategies for each environment. Riders apply their skills in real time across desert tracks, canyons, high-mountain passes, and sweeping backcountry pavement, turning the entire itinerary into a dynamic, real-world training environment.

We operate this tour twice per year as part of our seasonal migrations between our California and Colorado facilities. It typically runs once in late May as we open our Colorado center, and again in September as we close Colorado and return to California.

Our unique setup, owning and operating facilities in two of the most sought-after ADV destinations in the country, allows us to craft a seamless point-to-point itinerary with no one-way drop charges. And because this training-tour supports the movement of our fleet and staff between facilities, it also happens to be one of our most affordable multi-day adventures.

The result is a rare combination of legendary terrain, continuous skills development, and incredible value, all delivered through the Rawhyde training-tour experience.

Itinerary for our California to Colorado trip
Day 1 - Monday

Rawhyde Ranch to Death Valley National Park.

Death Valley is incredible. As America’s second largest National Park, it features roughly 200 miles of paved roads and more than 1,100 miles of dirt roads and trails, making it one of the most diverse and expansive riding environments in the country. On our approach to the park, we’ll visit the otherworldly Trona Pinnacles, a surreal landscape of towering tufa formations that feels like another planet. As we make our way into Death Valley, we’ll stop at Agueberry Point, an overlook with sweeping views that will absolutely astound you. Throughout the ride, Rawhyde coaches provide on-trail instruction before key terrain transitions, reviewing safe descending techniques, braking strategies, and body positioning to help riders navigate the park’s steep grades, loose surfaces, and vast open terrain with confidence. Our lodging for the night will be at Furnace Creek Ranch (subject to change), where riders can unwind, share stories from the day, and prepare for the next segment of this unique training-tour experience.

Day 2 - Tuesday

Furnace Creek to Las Vegas.

Day two begins with a ride through the awe inspiring Titus Canyon in Death Valley, a route designated as part of the California BDR. This one way trail winds through towering canyon walls, layered rock formations, and constantly changing textures and colors. Before entering the canyon, Rawhyde coaches review line choice, brake control, and visual scanning to help riders navigate the narrow passages, loose gravel, and flowing curves safely and confidently. After completing this stunning section of the park, we make our way to Las Vegas for the evening. Lodging tonight is at the Silverton Hotel and Casino (subject to change), where riders can relax, recharge, and get ready for the next stage of the training-tour.

Day 3 - Wednesday

Las Vegas to the Bar 10 ranch and the north rim of the Grand Canyon.

Today we pick up a leg of the Nevada BDR route as we ride north from Las Vegas. After leaving the city, we enter the backcountry near Mesquite and begin making our way toward the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. This section offers a mix of desert terrain and high plateau riding, creating ideal opportunities for Rawhyde coaches to review terrain reading, momentum management, and body positioning before riders encounter changing surfaces and elevation shifts. Our destination for the night is the Bar 10 Ranch (subject to change), an authentic working cattle ranch perched at the North Rim. Here, riders stay in the bunkhouse and enjoy a classic ranch style dinner, the perfect way to unwind after a full day of backcountry exploration and real world skill application on this training-tour.

Day 6 - Saturday

Durango to Salida, Colorado

Today is primarily a pavement day as we make our way deeper into Colorado, but it is far from ordinary. The highlight is crossing the top of Wolf Creek Pass near Pagosa Springs, a dramatic high point along the Continental Divide with sweeping mountain views in every direction. Even on pavement, this training-tour remains focused on skill development. Before we begin the climb and descent, Rawhyde coaches review proper cornering technique, visual scanning, braking strategy, lane positioning, and smooth throttle control to help riders confidently handle twisty mountain roads at elevation. This day offers a chance to refine on-road riding fundamentals while enjoying one of the most scenic stretches of pavement in the Rockies, reinforcing that adventure riding requires just as much precision and awareness on asphalt as it does on dirt.

Day 7 - Sunday Departure Day

Salida to Rawhyde and shuttle to airport

Your adventure with Rawhyde ends today as you arrive at Rawhyde Colorado. The final leg from Salida to the training center is short, but it is absolutely spectacular. The entire route follows the Continental Divide Trail, offering a perfect final opportunity to apply the skills you’ve developed throughout the training-tour. Before setting out, coaches review key on-trail techniques for mixed terrain, including line choice, body positioning, and smooth transitions between tighter forested sections and faster open stretches. The ride takes you through a massive Aspen forest before entering the steppe region, where the landscape opens into endless sky and wide prairie views. It is a stunning and peaceful conclusion to an unforgettable journey, combining beautiful scenery with one last chance to reinforce safe and confident riding practices. Depending on your schedule, you can catch a late afternoon flight home or choose a nearby hotel for an easy and timely departure from Denver the following day.
