The Tres Montañas (Three Mountains) Tour is Rawhyde’s newest two-day training-tour, built specifically for Next Step (level 3) and advanced riders who want a faster pace, more technical terrain, and real coaching in real environments. Over roughly 450 miles of challenging dirt, rocky climbs, and twisty mountain roads, riders will cross three of Southern California’s most rugged mountain ranges while applying advanced techniques throughout the ride.

NOTE – Because the route traverses high-elevation backcountry, it is subject to seasonal closures, weather impacts such as snowpack, and National Forest Service decisions, so the specific route may be adjusted as needed to ensure safety and compliance with current conditions.

Faster Pace. Longer Days. Designed for Advanced Riders.

As with all Rawhyde training-tours, our coaches make intentional instructional stops before major terrain changes. Riders receive guidance on body positioning, traction management, technical climbing and descending techniques, braking strategy, gear selection, and line choice. The focus is on reinforcing Next Step skills in dynamic, high-intensity scenarios that demand precision, timing, and confidence.

Tres Montañas is not a casual ride. It is designed for riders who want longer days, a quicker pace, and terrain that pushes both skill and endurance. With a balanced mix of technical dirt and flowing pavement transitions, the tour provides constant opportunities to refine advanced techniques while exploring some of the most challenging and beautiful backcountry routes in Southern California.

Each day is fully supported with experienced coaches, chase vehicles, hydration stops, and continuous on-trail instruction. Evenings at a “glamping” facility that we’ve partnered with offer comfortable accommodations, and time to review the day’s lessons with your coaches and fellow riders.

If you’re ready for a demanding, skill-focused training-tour that will elevate your riding and test your limits, Tres Montañas delivers an unforgettable challenge and an incredible next step in your adventure riding journey.

The Tres Montañas Tour
Day 1 The Long Way to Frazier Mountain & Overnight in New Cuyama

Frazier Mountain

Our adventure kicks off Monday morning as we leave Rawhyde Ranch, taking the long way to reach Frazier Mountain, our first major challenge of the tour. Rather than heading directly to the mountain, we warm up with a mix of twisty paved roads and rugged dirt sections, allowing coaches to review core techniques and set expectations before the terrain becomes more demanding. These early sections provide an ideal opportunity to reinforce body positioning, throttle control, and line selection while riders ease into the day. From there, we begin our ascent into higher elevations, climbing through dense pine forests, crisp mountain air, and expansive ridgeline views. Before key transitions, coaches pause the group to discuss approach strategies, braking choices, and gear selection, helping riders safely manage the loose terrain, ruts, and off-camber sections encountered on the descent. With Frazier Mountain behind us, we transition onto twisty mountain pavement and additional dirt sections as we make our way toward New Cuyama. This leg of the ride is long and demanding, creating plenty of opportunities to apply skills in varied conditions and build endurance throughout the day. Our evening is spent at a comfortable glamping site featuring yurts, running water, and hot showers. Riders can unwind around the firepit, review the day’s lessons with coaches and fellow riders, and then head to a local diner for a well-earned meal before settling in for the night.

Day 2 Cottonwood Canyon, the Mountains Above Santa Barbara & PCH Return

Cottonwood Canyon

After breakfast at the diner, we hit the road early, heading toward Mountain #2 - Cottonwood Canyon. This section demands full concentration and deliberate technique, so coaches make instructional stops to review body positioning, momentum management, and throttle and clutch control before entering the more technical terrain. Riders navigate rocky climbs, sandy sections, and constantly changing conditions, making this leg one of the most physically and mentally demanding parts of the training-tour. With Cottonwood Canyon behind us, we continue on to our third and final challenge - Santa Barbara’s coastal mountains. Before the ascent, coaches discuss line selection, braking strategy, and pacing to prepare riders for the rocky, rutted climbs ahead. Cresting the ridgelines rewards the group with sweeping Pacific Ocean views, while the descent offers a mix of tight switchbacks and faster sections that reinforce precision, control, and confidence under changing conditions. After completing the final mountain, we stop for lunch in the town of Los Olivos, giving riders time to refuel, hydrate, and debrief the day’s riding with coaches. The final stretch is far from an afterthought. We finish with a scenic ride along California’s iconic Pacific Coast Highway, using the flowing pavement as a cooldown while discussing road strategy and transition techniques before returning to Rawhyde Ranch.
